A day at the gallery

Today was my first visit to the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. I've probably walked past it a few hundred times in my life but for whatever reason never decided to step in until this afternoon.
It was the last day of an exhibit called Benjamin West and the Venetian Secret, which focused on two of West's paintings and told the story of his embarrassment in an obscure 18th-century art hoax. You can read about it here.

Few things tell a story better than a picture, so I'm aiming to post at least one photo a day for 2009. Some will have words to go along with them, and some won't. Here's one to get started:

Cool people leg wrestle

Leg Wrestling is the sport of champions. I first learned how to play as a kid when I was a cub scout in Pack 3 and I've been playing ever since. These days it's become a regular thing for my friends and I to do at parties. If you're not quite sure how to play, watch this 1975 game show demonstration with Gene Rayburn.

My first shot as an extra

Watch closely during the chase scene of the most recent Indiana Jones movie and you might catch me in the background walking down the sidewalk. I'm the guy all the way to the right in the picture up above, dressed as a 1950's college student with books in my hand.. the only one who's somewhat in focus. It was filmed back in the summer of 2007 on High Street in New Haven. The scene moves so quickly that I missed it entirely the first time I saw it.

Who threw a brick at me? (Part 2)

My high school buddies like to joke about the time I fell face down in the snow and started screaming "Who threw a brick at me?!". Nobody had, but it sure felt like they did.
It was years ago, and we were sledding on the hill at Derby High like we always would during the winter. I was standing at the top of the hill watching my friends go down when all of a sudden I felt a sharp pain in my right knee. For whatever reason, my initial thought was that someone had hit me with a brick. In reality, I had just twisted my leg at a funny angle and tore a muscle.
Since then I've had similar but less painful injuries happen to the same knee every year or so. Just a few weeks ago, while crossing the street with my friend Mindy, my leg went out on me again. This time it hurt like hell.
Two weeks passed and the pain just got worse and worse, so I finally decided to have it looked at. I had anticipated hearing the doctor give me the same old "you just have lousy knees" diagnosis, but this time they found something new.

A "floating body"! It could either be a chipped bone or torn cartilage. You can faintly see it in the highlighted circle of the x-ray above. Exciting.

Digging through old photos

I found myself browsing through my massive stash of old photos this morning for no particular reason. There's thousands.. It's amazing how many I've taken that I've never even seen.
Here's two from the Paul McCartney concert I went to two summers ago. Might not be the best shots I've ever taken, but if you're one of his fans you'll probably enjoy them.

I really like this one. I just wish that the microphone wasn't in the way.

Had a similiar one of these show up on bootlegs. This one is a bit more crisp.
